Minneapolis / Twin Cities Felony DWI Defense Lawyer

Repeat DWI offenses bring heightened penalties

Any DUI or DWI charge should be taken seriously, but if you have been charged with a felony DWI in Minnesota, you may be looking at consequences much more serious than you would have imagined. Minnesota law defines a felony as any crime where the punishment is more than one year of incarceration. Someone who is found guilty of a 1st degree (felony) DWI may be sentenced to:

  • Imprisionment for not more than 7 years (or more than seven years if the person has other prior criminal history)
  • A fine of not more than $14,000
  • or both

Most people know someone with a DWI charge, or even multiple DWI charges. The great majority of drivers convicted of a DWI eventually get their license back after a fine and a suspension. However, a felony DWI is higher category of crime and should be treated as such.

The penalties for felony DWI charges are severe and long-lasting. Your specific sentencing will depend on your unique set of cirucumstances, but the likelihood of arriving at the best possible outcome is much higher if you work with an experienced Twin Cities Felony DWI Defense Lawyer.

Repeat DWI Charges lead to a Felony DWI in Minnesota

A Minnesota driver can be found guilty of of first-degree DWI if the person violates DWI law:

  • within ten years of three or more qualifed prior impaired driving incidents (defined as prior convictions or license revocations for seperate impairied driving incidents); or
  • has previously been convited of a felony DWI crime; or
  • has previously been cvoncited of a felony-level crime of criminal vehicular homicide or injury (CVO) involving alcohol or controlled substances.
